1. In 1733, a meeting took place in Williamsburg where a decision was made to establish a public hospital for the indigent sick in Virginia. This led to the founding of the Public Hospital of Williamsburg, which became the first hospital in America devoted solely to the care and treatment of mental illness.

2. On January 22, 1788, Virginia became the 10th state to ratify the United States Constitution, thus making it a part of the nation. The state played a critical role in the birth of the nation and several of its Founding Fathers hailed from Virginia, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison.

3. In 1863, the Battle of Kelly's Ford took place near Culpeper, Virginia, during the American Civil War. It was one of the first cavalry battles of the war and resulted in a Union victory. The skirmish paved the way for larger and more decisive battles in the region.

4. On January 22, 1901, the first international radio transmission was successfully sent from Cape Henry, Virginia, to Great Britain. The transmission was sent by Guglielmo Marconi, an Italian inventor and electrical engineer, and marked a significant milestone in the development of modern telecommunications.

5. In 1987, Virginia's first African American governor, L. Douglas Wilder, was inaugurated in Richmond. Wilder served as governor from 1990 to 1994 and was known for his progressive policies, including his support for education and civil rights. He also served as the mayor of Richmond and as a U.S. Senator.
