1. In 1964, the Michigan State Spartans basketball team defeated the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame 103-88. This was the first-ever college basketball game broadcasted nationally in color on NBC.

2. On January 23, 1973, President Nixon announced the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Michigan was one of the states that had previously established its own environmental protection agency in 1965.

3. In 1996, the Detroit Red Wings set an NHL record by winning their 62nd game of the season. They went on to win the Stanley Cup that year.

4. On January 23, 1959, the Mackinac Bridge Authority announced that construction of the Mackinac Bridge had been completed and the bridge was ready to open. The bridge connects the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan and is considered a marvel of engineering.

5. The Michigan Wolverines men's basketball team defeated the Michigan State Spartans 86-57 on January 23, 2013. This was the largest victory over the Spartans for the Wolverines since 1996.
