1. On January 24, 1639, the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut were adopted in Hartford, marking the first written constitution in American history. The document outlined the basic principles and laws governing the Connecticut Colony and served as a model for later constitutions, including the United States Constitution.

2. In 1949, the University of Connecticut's first female students were admitted. Prior to this, UConn had been an all-male institution. The first group of female students consisted of just 25 women, but they paved the way for many more women to attend the university in the years to come.

3. On January 24, 1978, the Great Blizzard of 1978 began, bringing record-breaking snowfall and causing widespread damage and transportation disruptions throughout the Northeast. Connecticut was one of the hardest-hit states, with some areas receiving up to 30 inches of snow.

4. In 1835, the Connecticut Humane Society was founded in Hartford, with the goal of promoting animal welfare and preventing cruelty to animals. Today, the organization continues to provide a wide range of animal care and protection services throughout the state.

5. January 24 is also the birthday of artist and illustrator Reuben Nakian, who was born in 1897 in College Point, New York. Nakian spent much of his career in Connecticut, working as a sculptor and teacher in the Hartford area. His work can be seen in museums and public spaces throughout the state and beyond.
