1. In 1866, the Georgia legislature reinstated Henry Benning's citizenship. Benning was a Confederate general and prominent Georgia attorney, who argued for Georgia's secession from the United States.
2. On January 24, 1920, the Georgia State College for Women opened its doors. It was the first public women's college in the state and was founded in response to the growing demand for women's education.
3. The first Georgia state constitution was adopted on January 24, 1777, during the American Revolution. The constitution established Georgia as a state and was modeled after the United States Constitution.
4. In 2019, Atlanta hosted Super Bowl LIII on January 24. The event took place at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and was the third Super Bowl hosted by the city.
5. On January 24, 1936, Wiley Post, a pioneering aviator, set a new world airplane speed record by flying from Los Angeles to New York in under 12 hours. He later crash-landed in Alaska and died in a subsequent rescue attempt. Post's plane, the Lockheed Vega, is on display at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.
