1. On January 25, 1921, the West Virginia State Capitol building was completed. The building's construction cost $10 million and took seven years to complete.

2. In 1863, on January 25, West Virginia became the 35th state of the United States. Prior to this, the region was part of Virginia, but broke away to form a new state during the Civil War due to major political and cultural differences.

3. On January 25, 1908, the first train crossed the New River Gorge Bridge in Fayette County. The bridge spans 3,030 feet across the New River, and at the time of its completion was the longest steel arch bridge in the world.

4. In 1985, on January 25, West Virginia's first female governor, Arch Moore Jr.'s daughter, Shelley Moore Capito, was sworn into the West Virginia House of Delegates.

5. January 25th is also National Irish Coffee Day. Although not specifically West Virginia related, it is worth noting that the drink was first introduced to the United States by a bartender in San Francisco in 1952. It quickly became a favorite among West Virginia's coal miners.
