1. On January 27, 1785, the Maryland Historical Society was founded in Baltimore. The society is dedicated to preserving and sharing Maryland's rich history and culture.

2. In 1865, on January 27, Maryland ratified the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which abolished slavery in the country.

3. On January 27, 1922, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra gave its first official concert at the Lyric Theatre in Baltimore. Today, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is recognized as one of the top symphonies in the country.

4. In 1967, Maryland Governor Spiro Agnew announced his plan to establish a new state police force, called the Maryland State Police Department. The department has since grown into a highly respected law enforcement agency.

5. On January 27, 1977, a fire broke out at the Beverly Hills Supper Club in Southgate, Kentucky, killing 165 people, including several from Maryland who were attending a convention. The tragedy spurred new fire safety regulations and changes in building codes, and still stands as one of the deadliest nightclub fires in US history.
