1. In 1942, the Cherokee Nation officially abolished slavery within its borders. Prior to this, slavery had been legal in the Cherokee Nation since its inception in the early 19th century. The decision to abolish slavery was a controversial one, with some tribal members arguing that it violated their property rights.

2. On January 28, 1924, the Oklahoma state legislature ratified the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which granted women the right to vote. Oklahoma was one of the first states to ratify the amendment, which was officially adopted by the federal government later that year.

3. In 1958, a major winter storm swept through Oklahoma, bringing record snowfall and sub-zero temperatures to much of the state. The storm caused widespread power outages and transportation disruptions, and resulted in several deaths. It was one of the most severe winter storms in Oklahoma's history.

4. On January 28, 1986, Oklahoma astronaut William Pogue participated in the final mission of the space shuttle Challenger. The mission ended in tragedy when the Challenger exploded shortly after liftoff, killing all seven crew members. Pogue had previously flown in space as part of the Skylab 4 mission in 1973.

5. In 1898, the U.S. government opened a new Indian boarding school in Canton, Oklahoma. The school, which was called the Canton Asylum for Insane Indians, was intended to provide mental health services to Native American patients. However, the school was plagued by allegations of abuse and mistreatment, and was eventually closed down in the 1930s. Today, the site is owned by the state of Oklahoma and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
