1. On January 29, 1867, the United States Congress officially recognized the newly formed Dakota Territory, which included what is now North Dakota.

2. The 15th Infantry Regiment of the United States Army was stationed in North Dakota on January 29, 1873, establishing Fort Buford near the confluence of the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers.

3. On January 29, 1901, North Dakota became the first state to ban discrimination based on political affiliation or opinion.

4. The first airplane to fly over North Dakota did so on January 29, 1911, when aviator Roland Garros flew a Blériot XI monoplane from Moorhead, Minnesota, to Fargo.

5. On January 29, 1932, the Bank of North Dakota was established, becoming the only state-owned bank in the United States. Its purpose was to promote agriculture, commerce, and industry in the state.
