1. In 1868, the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians signed a treaty with the United States government, ceding land to the U.S. government in return for payment and assistance in moving to new land. Today, the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians is based in North Dakota.

2. In 1950, the temperature in Tower, Minnesota reached a record low of -60 degrees Fahrenheit (-51 degrees Celsius), which remains the coldest temperature ever recorded in Minnesota.

3. In 1920, the University of Minnesota football team defeated the University of Oregon 17-14 in the second-ever Rose Bowl game, held in Pasadena, California.

4. In 1981, the historic St. James Hotel in Red Wing, Minnesota was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The hotel, which was built in 1875, is still in operation and features Victorian-style rooms and a fine-dining restaurant.

5. In 1999, Minnesota became the first state in the U.S. to launch a statewide school recycling program. The program, called Recycle More Minnesota, has since expanded to include a variety of recycling initiatives and has helped Minnesota become one of the top states in the country for recycling.
