3. In 1933, the West Virginia Legislature passed the "Blue Laws," which restricted certain activities on Sundays, including the sale of alcohol and certain forms of entertainment. The laws remained in effect until 1985, when the state Supreme Court declared them unconstitutional.

4. On January 30, 1948, the town of Welch suffered a devastating fire that destroyed several businesses and homes. The fire was so intense that firefighters had to use dynamite to create firebreaks and prevent it from spreading further. The event highlighted the need for better fire safety measures in West Virginia communities.

5. In 1961, the West Virginia Turnpike opened to the public. The 88-mile toll road stretches from Charleston to Princeton and has been an important transportation route for the state for over 50 years. The road's construction also led to improved economic growth and development in southern West Virginia.
