1. In 1972, a massive tornado outbreak hit Arkansas, with 14 tornadoes reported across the state. The worst of these storms was an F4 tornado that struck the town of Dermott, killing 7 people and injuring over 100.

2. On January 31, 1921, the first commercial oil well in Arkansas was completed in the town of El Dorado. The discovery of oil in the state helped to spur economic growth and development in Arkansas.

3. In 1865, a group of Confederate soldiers under the command of General Sterling Price attacked the town of Dardanelle, Arkansas. Union forces successfully defended the town and the Confederate soldiers retreated southward.

4. On January 31, 1889, the Arkansas State Capitol building in Little Rock was destroyed by fire. A new capitol building was eventually built on the same site.

5. In 1971, the University of Arkansas Razorbacks football team won the school's first-ever Southwest Conference championship. The team, led by head coach Frank Broyles, finished the season with a record of 8-2-1 and went on to play in the Liberty Bowl.
