1. On January 5, 1912, Arizona became the 48th state of the United States. This historic event marked the end of more than 50 years of territorial status and the beginning of a new era of statehood for Arizona. To celebrate the occasion, a grand ceremony was held at the state capitol in Phoenix, with thousands of people in attendance.

2. On January 5, 1931, the U.S. Post Office issued a new 2-cent stamp featuring the Grand Canyon. The stamp, designed by artist Maynard Dixon, was part of a series of stamps highlighting national parks and scenic areas across the country. Today, the Grand Canyon stamp is still highly sought after by stamp collectors.

3. January 5, 1933 was a day of tragedy in Arizona, as a massive earthquake struck the town of Quail Springs. The quake, which measured 6.4 on the Richter scale, caused widespread damage and numerous injuries. Thankfully, there were no fatalities.

4. On January 5, 1961, Phoenix native Sandra Day O'Connor was sworn in as an assistant attorney general for the state of Arizona. O'Connor went on to become the first woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, where she served from 1981 until her retirement in 2006.

5. January 5, 2015 was an important day for the Arizona Cardinals football team, as they clinched a playoff spot with a victory over the San Francisco 49ers. The Cardinals went on to make it all the way to the NFC Championship game that year, where they lost to the Carolina Panthers. However, the season was considered a success for the Cardinals and their fans.
