1. In 1911, the Kentucky State Capitol building in Frankfort burned down. The fire reportedly started in the basement and quickly spread throughout the building, destroying everything but the outer walls. While the cause of the fire is unknown, many believe it was started by faulty electric wiring.
2. On January 5, 1933, construction began on the Kentucky Dam in Livingston County. The dam, which was completed in 1944, was built to help control flooding on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers and to generate hydroelectric power.
3. In 1953, the University of Kentucky's basketball team defeated the University of Tennessee 77-59 in Lexington. The game was notable because it marked the Wildcats' first victory in the SEC conference. The team went on to win the conference championship that year.
4. On January 5, 2003, Louisville native Jennifer Lawrence made her film debut in the independent film "The Bill Engvall Show." The future Oscar winner played the daughter of a family being counseled by Engvall's character.
5. In 2016, a 21-year-old Western Kentucky University student named Katie Autry was found dead in her dorm room. Autry had been beaten, sexually assaulted, and set on fire by her roommate's boyfriend and another man. Both men were convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole. The case sparked outrage and led to increased safety measures on college campuses across the state.
