1. In 1928, Cleveland's Terminal Tower, Ohio's tallest building at the time, officially opened.

2. On January 5, 1946, the first electron microscope was demonstrated at the Ohio State University. The instrument, invented by Ernst Ruska and Max Knoll, allowed scientists to see objects too small to be viewed with an optical microscope.

3. In 2003, Ohio resident and NASA astronaut Michael Foale became the first person to complete a spacewalk on his birthday. Foale was 45 years old at the time.

4. On January 5, 1933, construction began on the Ohio River floodwall in Portsmouth, Ohio. The wall, still in use today, was built to prevent flooding in the city's downtown area.

5. In 1912, a severe ice storm hit Cleveland, causing significant damage and power outages. The storm was later referred to as the "Ice Sunday" storm and is still remembered in local history.
