1. In 1907, Oklahoma officially became the 46th state in the United States of America. Residents of the Oklahoma Territory and the Indian Territory had voted to merge and become a single state in 1905, and after two years of waiting for approval from the US Congress, the state was finally admitted.
2. In 1934, the famous outlaw Bonnie Parker was released from prison after serving several months for a bungled robbery attempt. Parker and her partner Clyde Barrow had become notorious for a series of bank robberies and murders throughout the Midwest, and they continued their crime spree after Parker's release.
3. In 1948, the Oklahoma State Legislature voted to ban the teaching of evolution in public schools. The law, known as the Oklahoma Science Education Act, required teachers to give equal time to theories of evolution and to the biblical account of creation. The law was later repealed in 1963.
4. In 1988, the Oklahoma Sooners football team won the Orange Bowl, defeating the University of Miami Hurricanes 20-14. The Sooners finished the season with an 11-1 record and were ranked #3 in the final Associated Press poll.
