1. Delaware became the first state to ratify the United States Constitution on January 6, 1787. This historic event took place in Dover when Delaware's delegates voted unanimously in favor of ratification.
2. On January 6, 1832, Wilmington, Delaware's first gas company was incorporated. Known as the Wilmington Gas Light Company, it was responsible for lighting the city's streets with gas-powered lamps.
3. Delaware's State Flag Day is celebrated annually on January 6. On this day in 1913, the Delaware state flag was adopted by the Delaware General Assembly. The flag features a blue background with a diamond in the center, containing the state's coat of arms and motto.
4. The Wilmington Institute Free Library, now known as the Wilmington Public Library, officially opened its doors on January 6, 1891. It was one of the first public libraries in Delaware and provided free access to books and educational materials for all residents of Wilmington.
5. On January 6, 1951, Gino Marchetti, a native of Antioch, California, signed with the Baltimore Colts after being drafted in the second round of the NFL Draft. Marchetti went on to become one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history, earning 11 Pro Bowl selections and being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1972.
