1. In 1867, Augusta became the capital of Maine. Prior to this, the capital was located in Portland.

2. On January 9, 1922, the University of Maine School of Law was established. It is located in Portland and is the oldest law school in the state.

3. In 1961, Maine experienced a devastating ice storm on January 9th. The storm lasted for several days and resulted in widespread power outages and damage to trees and homes.

4. On January 9, 1972, the Maine Mariners hockey team played their first game in the newly constructed Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland. The team was part of the American Hockey League and played in the arena until 1992.

5. In 2005, Maine Governor John E. Baldacci declared January 9th "Maine Marine Mammal Day" in honor of the state's diverse population of marine mammals such as whales, seals, and dolphins. Maine has a long history of marine mammal research and conservation efforts.
