1. On July 10, 1842, the town of Dubuque, Iowa experienced its first major flood. The Mississippi River overflowed its banks and caused widespread damage to the town.

2. In 1923, the first flight across Iowa took place on July 10th. Aviators Walter Johnson and John Nelson flew from Des Moines to Omaha, Nebraska in a Curtiss JN-4D biplane.

3. July 10, 1981 marked the opening of the Field of Dreams movie set in Dyersville, Iowa. The site is now a popular tourist attraction and hosts thousands of visitors each year.

4. On July 10, 1997, a massive tornado ripped through southern Iowa, causing over $100 million in damages. The town of Charles City was hit especially hard, with 30 blocks downtown being destroyed.

5. July 10, 2010 saw the implementation of Iowa's smoking ban. The law prohibits smoking in all public places, including bars and restaurants, in an effort to reduce the harm caused by secondhand smoke.
