1. The Nevada State Journal newspaper was first published on July 10, 1870. It was founded by Charles W. Friend and eventually merged with the Reno Evening Gazette in 1983 to become the Reno Gazette-Journal.
2. On July 10, 1934, John Herbert Dillinger, notorious American gangster, was shot and killed by federal agents outside the Biograph Theatre in Chicago, Illinois. Dillinger was known to have spent time in Nevada, including a stay at the Overland Hotel in Reno.
3. In 1987, the Great Fire of 1987 started on July 10 in the Tahoe National Forest near the California-Nevada border. The fire burned over 172,000 acres and destroyed 254 homes and other structures.
4. On July 10, 1998, the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas reopened its doors after a massive renovation project. The project cost over $1 billion and included the addition of a 30-story hotel tower, a larger casino floor, and several new restaurants and nightclubs.
5. The Nevada Board of Pardons granted a posthumous pardon to Robert Brassell Jr. on July 10, 2019. Brassell had been convicted of a 1975 murder and served nine years in prison before being released on parole. New evidence uncovered in 2014 suggested that Brassell may have been innocent, and the pardon was granted to clear his name.
