1. In 1836, General Thomas Jefferson Rusk arrived in Gonzales, Texas to seek reinforcements after the Battle of San Jacinto. He was sent by General Sam Houston to request the help of Texan troops in securing the fledgling republic's independence.

2. On July 10, 1905, the first rodeo ever held in Texas took place in Pecos, Texas. The event featured bronco riding, calf roping, steer wrestling, and bull riding, and quickly became an annual tradition in Pecos and other Texas towns.

3. In 1943, the Texas Rangers announced they would hire their first African American players, Cleo Carlyle and Willard Brown. The move was met with outrage by some fans and players, but ultimately helped break down racial barriers in the sport.

4. On July 10, 1974, the Houston Rockets selected Moses Malone in the NBA draft. Malone went on to become one of the most dominant basketball players of the 1970s and 80s, leading the Rockets to the NBA finals in 1981 and winning three MVP awards.
