1. In 1804, Alexander Hamilton died in a duel with Vice President Aaron Burr. Although the duel took place in New Jersey, Hamilton was transported to New York City to receive medical attention and eventually died in the home of William Bayard Jr. on H Street in Washington, DC.

2. In 1864, Confederate General Jubal Early launched an attack on Fort Stevens during the Civil War. This was the only time during the war that Confederate forces threatened Washington, DC. President Lincoln personally observed the battle from the fort and was nearly hit by enemy fire.

3. On July 11, 1936, the National Geographic Society presented the first polar bear ever exhibited in the United States to the National Zoo in Washington, DC. The bear, named Nanook, became a popular attraction at the zoo until his death in 1941.

4. In 1955, the District of Columbia Public Library launched a "bookmobile" program, which brought library services to underserved areas of the city. The first bookmobile was a converted bus that traveled to neighborhoods that didn't have a branch library.

5. On July 11, 1995, the first DC United soccer game was played at RFK Stadium. The team, which has won four MLS Cups, is one of the most successful professional sports franchises in the history of the District of Columbia.
