2. On July 12, 1962, the world's first shopping mall, the Penn Square Mall, opened in Oklahoma City. It was designed by commercial architect William S. Kapp, and featured an indoor fountain, a large food court, and anchor tenants such as J.C. Penney and Montgomery Ward.
