1. New Jersey was one of the 13 original colonies that declared independence from Great Britain on July 4, 1776. However, it wasn't until July 14, 1776, that the New Jersey delegation in the Continental Congress officially approved the Declaration of Independence.

2. On July 14, 1937, the iconic jet-powered experimental aircraft, the Bell X-1, made its maiden flight in New Jersey. Piloted by famous test pilot Chuck Yeager, the aircraft exceeded the speed of sound for the first time in history, ushering in a new era of aviation.

3. In 1983, NJ Governor Thomas Kean signed a bill establishing July 14 as "Victory in Europe Day" in New Jersey, to honor the Allied forces' victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. The day is celebrated annually with parades and ceremonies in towns throughout the state.

4. On July 14, 1914, a massive fire broke out in the city of Salem, NJ, destroying much of the downtown area. The fire was so intense that it could be seen from Philadelphia, over 30 miles away. Despite the destruction, the city rebuilt and has since become a popular tourist destination.

5. New Jersey is home to one of the world's most famous amusement parks, Six Flags Great Adventure. On July 14, 1978, the park opened its iconic roller coaster, the Great American Scream Machine. At the time, it was the tallest and fastest roller coaster in the world, thrilling riders with its twists, turns, and drops. Today, it remains one of Six Flags' most popular attractions.
