1. In 1952, the Mount Washington Observatory recorded a wind gust of 231 miles per hour, setting the record for the highest wind speed ever recorded at the time. The record held until 1996 when it was surpassed by a gust recorded during a typhoon in Australia.

2. On July 15, 1929, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard completed construction on the USS Squalus, the first submarine equipped with a diving chamber. The Squalus would go on to suffer a malfunction during a test dive in 1939, leading to the death of 26 crew members.

3. In 1965, Franconia College in Franconia, New Hampshire opened its doors for its first full year of classes. The liberal arts college would go on to become known for its experimental approach to education and its commitment to social justice causes.

4. On July 15, 1968, the New Hampshire state legislature adopted a new state flag that featured the state seal on a blue field. The previous flag, adopted in 1909, featured the state seal surrounded by a laurel wreath on a buff background.

5. The 23rd Annual New Hampshire Sheep and Wool Festival was held on July 15, 2006, at the Hopkinton State Fairgrounds. The festival is a celebration of all things woolly, including sheepdog trials, sheep shearing demonstrations, and a marketplace showcasing locally-produced fiber products.
