1. In 1949, a major flood hit Arkansas causing widespread devastation. The flood affected several counties and resulted in the loss of many lives and property damage.

2. On July 16, 1968, Willie Davis became the first African American to be elected to the Arkansas state legislature. Davis was a champion of civil rights and education and served his community with distinction.

3. In 1974, the Arkansas Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling that allowed women to serve on juries. Prior to this ruling, women were excluded from serving on juries in Arkansas based solely on their gender.

4. On July 16, 1997, the Little Rock Nine, a group of African American students who integrated Central High School in Little Rock, were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. The award recognized their bravery in the face of racism and segregation.

5. In 2007, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for president. Huckabee, who had served as governor from 1996 to 2007, ran as a social conservative and performed well in the early primaries before ultimately losing to John McCain.
