1. On July 16, 1969, NASA's Apollo 11 mission launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida with Georgia native astronaut John W. Young as the command module pilot. Young was born in San Francisco but grew up in Cartersville, Georgia, where he attended local schools.

2. The Battle of Peachtree Creek took place on July 16, 1864, during the American Civil War. Confederate forces under General John Bell Hood were attempting to attack Union forces under General William T. Sherman, but were repulsed with heavy losses. The battle took place in what is now the Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta.

3. On July 16, 1934, the first federal prisoners arrived at the newly-opened Atlanta Federal Penitentiary. The prison, which is still in operation today, was built in order to house some of the most dangerous criminals in the country.

4. One of Georgia's most famous folk artists, Howard Finster, was born on July 16, 1916. Finster was a self-taught artist who is best known for his intricate, colorful paintings and sculptures that often incorporated religious themes and messages.

5. On July 16, 1959, the Georgia Board of Regents voted to integrate the University of Georgia, making it the first public university in the state to do so. The decision came after years of protests and legal challenges, and was a significant victory for the civil rights movement. The first Black students were admitted to the university in January of 1961.
