1. In 1878, the town of Minnewaukan was established in Benson County, North Dakota. It was named after the Native American word for "good water."

2. On July 17, 1941, the North Dakota National Guard's 164th Infantry Regiment was federalized and sent to train for a possible deployment in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

3. In 1976, the North Dakota State Capitol building in Bismarck was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The building was completed in 1934 and features an Art Deco style.

4. The University of North Dakota School of Law was established on July 17, 1899. It is the only law school in the state and has produced many prominent legal professionals.

5. On July 17, 1987, Grand Forks Air Force Base became the home of the 319th Air Refueling Wing, which operates KC-135R Stratotankers. The base plays a vital role in global air mobility and national defense.
