1. In 1912, the town of Machias elected Alice L. Burlock as the first female selectman in Maine history. Burlock served on the Machias Board of Selectmen for three years, working to improve the town's infrastructure and services.
2. On July 20, 1975, the Maine Mariners professional hockey team was founded. The team played in the American Hockey League until moving to Providence, Rhode Island in 1992.
3. In 1864, the Battle of Peachtree Creek took place during the American Civil War. The battle, which occurred near Atlanta, Georgia, involved Maine soldiers fighting on behalf of the Union army. Maine troops suffered heavy losses, with over 1,100 soldiers killed or wounded during the battle.
4. On July 20, 1933, the Maine State Highway Commission approved the construction of the Boothbay Harbor Footbridge. The bridge, which spans the harbor's inner bay, has become a popular tourist attraction and is a popular spot for fishing and sightseeing.
5. In 1969, the Apollo 11 mission successfully landed two astronauts, Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, on the surface of the moon. Maine residents followed the historic event closely, with many tuning in to watch the moon landing on television.
