3. On July 22, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed a bill into law granting land to establish a railroad line between the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul and the town of Duluth on Lake Superior. This helped facilitate the growth of the iron mining industry in northern Minnesota.

4. The Great Northern Railway depot in St. Cloud, Minnesota, opened on July 22, 1909. The depot served as a major transportation hub for Central Minnesota until it was closed in 1975. Today, the building has been restored and is used as a museum.

5. In 1991, the Hennepin County Government Center in downtown Minneapolis was the site of a dramatic courtroom shootout that left two people dead and several others injured.
