1. In 1934, notorious criminal John Dillinger was shot and killed by FBI agents in front of the Biograph Theater in Chicago. However, two of his accomplices who had been holed up in a house in St. Paul, Minnesota managed to escape. One of them, Homer Van Meter, was recaptured in Seattle on July 22, 1934 after a shootout with police.

2. On July 22, 1952, a major earthquake struck the Olympia area, causing widespread damage and property loss. The quake measured 7.5 on the Richter scale and was felt as far away as British Columbia.

3. In 1977, serial killer Ted Bundy was captured in the Miami area after a nationwide manhunt. Bundy had committed a series of murders in several states, including Washington, and was eventually sentenced to death for his crimes.

4. On July 22, 1991, riots erupted in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood after police officers were acquitted in the beating of Rodney King in Los Angeles. The riots, which lasted for several days, resulted in widespread property damage and numerous injuries.

5. In 2016, a hot air balloon crash in Texas killed all 16 people on board, including two residents of Washington state. The balloon was owned and operated by a company based in Austin, Texas.
