1. In 1984, Geraldine Ferraro, the first female vice-presidential nominee of a major political party, visited Ohio to campaign with Democratic presidential candidate Walter Mondale. Ferraro's historic nomination represented a major milestone in American politics and opened the door for other women to run for high office.

2. On July 23, 1914, the first patent for an electric traffic signal was issued to American inventor Garrett Morgan. Morgan, who was born in Kentucky but lived and worked in Ohio, also invented a gas mask that was used extensively by American troops during World War I.

3. In 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright made aviation history when they successfully flew their airplane at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The brothers hailed from Dayton, Ohio, and conducted much of their research and testing at the Huffman Prairie Flying Field near Dayton. Their pioneering work paved the way for the modern aviation industry.

4. On July 23, 1863, Ohioan John Hunt Morgan, a Confederate general during the Civil War, led his troops into Ohio as part of a raid that was intended to distract Union forces from the main Confederate army. The raid was ultimately unsuccessful, and Morgan and most of his men were captured and imprisoned.

5. In 1949, the Cleveland Indians baseball team hosted the first All-Star Game to be played at night. The game was broadcast on television and featured some of baseball's biggest stars, including Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, and Stan Musial. The game itself ended in a 3-3 tie, but the event helped popularize night games and changed the way that baseball was played and watched.
