1. In 1902, the mining town of Goldfield was officially established in Nevada. The town quickly became a hub for gold and silver mining, and at its peak had a population of over 30,000 people.

2. On July 25, 1905, a sensational murder trial began in Reno. The accused was Harry Thaw, who had shot and killed architect Stanford White in New York City the previous year. Thaw's wealthy family had hired some of the country's top lawyers to defend him, and the trial became a media circus.

3. In 1925, the Hoover Dam project began construction on the border of Nevada and Arizona. The dam, which was completed in 1935, created Lake Mead and provided hydroelectric power to much of the Southwest.

4. In 1959, Nevada became the first state to legalize casino gambling. This move helped turn Las Vegas into a major tourist destination, and the city's casinos and resorts continue to draw millions of visitors each year.

5. On July 25, 1962, the Nevada Test Site conducted its first underground nuclear test. Over the next few decades, the site was used to test a variety of nuclear weapons, and its impact on the surrounding environment and nearby communities is still being studied today.
