1. In 1943, the Oklahoma Capitol Building was completed after a 16-year-long construction process due to the Great Depression and World War II. The building stands at 452 feet tall and is the only capitol building in the nation with an oil derrick on its grounds.
2. In 1963, the Wah Mee Massacre occurred in Seattle, Washington where two Oklahoma natives, Willy Mak and Benjamin Ng, along with a third accomplice, killed 13 people in a gambling club. Both Mak and Ng were eventually apprehended and convicted of first-degree murder.
3. In 1980, Oklahoma City native and professional golfer Nancy Lopez won the U.S. Women's Open, her second major championship of the year. Lopez is known for having won 48 LPGA Tour events and being inducted into the LPGA and World Golf Halls of Fame.
4. In 2004, former Oklahoma State University and NBA basketball player Bryant "Big Country" Reeves officially retired from basketball due to chronic back problems. Reeves was the sixth overall pick in the 1995 NBA draft and led the Oklahoma State Cowboys to a Final Four appearance in 1995.
5. In 2010, the Oklahoma City Thunder signed former all-star forward and Olympic gold medalist Kevin Durant to a five-year contract extension worth $85 million dollars. Durant went on to win four scoring titles with the Thunder before leaving to join the Golden State Warriors in 2016.
