2. On July 26, 1943, the US Navy commissioned the USS Washington, a South Dakota-class battleship. The ship was the second to bear the name of the state and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II, earning numerous battle stars.

3. In 1962, Seattle resident Galen Rowell became the first person to summit Mount Kennedy, a peak located in the Yukon Territory with an elevation of 13,944 feet. He was accompanied on the climb by Robert Kennedy, then the US Attorney General and brother of President John F. Kennedy.

4. In 1993, the Seattle Mariners' Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 150th home run in a game against the Oakland Athletics. At the time, Griffey was just 23 years old and on his way to a Hall of Fame career.

5. On July 26, 2005, Seattle-based Starbucks announced the launch of its new wireless internet service, which would be available in more than 2,000 of its stores across the US.
