1. On July 27, 1825, the Treaty of St. Louis was signed, ceding much of land in modern-day Kansas to the United States. The treaty was signed between the US government and various Native American tribes, including the Osage, Kansa, and Missouri.
2. In 1864, during the American Civil War, the Battle of the Little Blue River was fought in Jackson County, Missouri. Union forces were trying to protect wagon trains and supplies from Confederate raiders, who were attempting to disrupt Union supply lines. The battle resulted in a Union victory.
3. In 1889, the Haskell Institute (now known as Haskell Indian Nations University) was established in Lawrence, Kansas. The school was founded to provide education and vocational training to Native American students.
4. On July 27, 1915, the deadliest train wreck in Kansas history occurred near the town of Mulvane. Two trains, one carrying passengers and the other carrying mail and express freight, collided head-on, resulting in the deaths of 23 people and injuring many more.
5. In 1984, the Wizard of Oz museum opened in Wamego, Kansas. The museum showcases memorabilia from the classic film, which was partly filmed in Kansas. The town of Liberal, Kansas also claims to be the "Land of Oz" and hosts an annual Ozfest celebration.
