1. On July 27, 1863, during the Civil War, the Battle of Moorefield took place in Hardy County. Union forces under Brigadier General William Averell defeated Confederate forces led by Colonel William Jones in a surprise attack.

2. In 1907, the first interurban trolley car in West Virginia began operations between Parkersburg and Marietta, Ohio. The trolley car was part of the Ohio River Railway Company.

3. On July 27, 1954, the West Virginia Turnpike officially opened to traffic. The 88-mile toll road, which runs from Charleston to Bluefield, was the first modern superhighway in the state.

4. In 1968, the West Virginia State Police Academy was established in Institute. The academy trains new recruits and provides continuing education for veteran troopers.

5. On July 27, 1990, the Summersville Lake was created when the United States Army Corps of Engineers completed the Summersville Dam. The lake covers over 2,700 acres and is a popular destination for boating and fishing.
