This was a response to the economic instability caused by the proliferation of unregulated banks and the issuance of paper money that was often worthless or difficult to redeem.

2. On July 29, 1908, the first automobile race was held at the Mississippi State Fairgrounds in Jackson. The race was won by a local driver named Jack Prince who drove a Buick. The event drew a large crowd and helped to popularize automobile racing in the state.

3. In 1936, a devastating tornado struck Tupelo, Mississippi, killing over 200 people and causing widespread destruction. The tornado, which had winds over 200 mph, was one of the deadliest in U.S. history and prompted the federal government to establish a nationwide tornado warning system.

4. On July 29, 1966, the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission was abolished by an act of the state legislature. The commission, which had been created in 1956 to resist federal desegregation efforts, had operated in secret and had engaged in a range of illegal and unethical activities, including spying on civil rights activists and intimidating black citizens.

5. In 1999, Mississippi became the last state to ratify the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which abolished slavery and involuntary servitude. The state's ratification came over 130 years after the amendment was first proposed by Congress in 1865.
