1. In 1897, Tennessee governor Robert Love Taylor was born. He served as governor from 1887-1891 and again from 1897-1899, and was known for his stirring oratory and his opposition to the state's Democratic establishment.
2. On July 29, 1945, two B-25 bombers crashed into the Empire State Building in New York City, killing fourteen people including the pilots, and injuring many more. Among the survivors was Betty Lou Oliver, who fell 75 floors in an elevator and survived with multiple injuries.

In 1982, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) completed construction of the Raccoon Mountain Pumped-Storage Plant, which uses excess energy from other power plants to pump water to a storage reservoir at the top of a nearby mountain. The water can then be released to generate electricity during periods of high demand.
4. In 1996, the Atlanta Olympics began, and several events were held in Tennessee. The Whitewater Slalom competition took place on the Ocoee River, which was modified to create more challenging rapids. The Soccer event was held at the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis.
5. On July 29, 2010, the Music City Star commuter train began operation between Nashville and Lebanon, TN. The train runs on a 32-mile line that was originally built in the 19th century, and was renovated with new track, stations, and rolling stock. The train provides a faster and more environmentally-friendly way to commute to and from Nashville.
