1. In 1864, the Battle of Atlanta took place during the American Civil War. Union General William T. Sherman led his troops to victory over Confederate General John Bell Hood's Army of Tennessee. The battle resulted in a key Union victory that helped pave the way for Sherman's infamous March to the Sea.

2. In 1945, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine and sunk, resulting in the deaths of nearly 900 sailors. Many of the surviving crew members were stranded at sea for several days before rescue teams arrived. The ship's tragic sinking was a major blow to the U.S. Navy during World War II.

3. The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) was founded in Atlanta in 1957 by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights leaders. The organization played a pivotal role in the American civil rights movement, advocating for desegregation and equality for African Americans.

4. In 1974, Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter was selected as the Democratic Party's nominee for President of the United States. Carter, who had previously served as a state senator and governor of Georgia, went on to win the 1976 Presidential election against incumbent Gerald Ford.

5. The Georgia Dome, a massive indoor sports and entertainment venue, opened in Atlanta on July 30, 1992. The Dome served as the home stadium for the NFL's Atlanta Falcons, as well as hosting numerous other events, before being replaced by the newer Mercedes-Benz Stadium in 2017.
