1. In 1684, Kent County was established by the Delaware General Assembly, becoming one of the three original counties in the state. Today, Kent County is home to major municipalities such as Dover, the capital of Delaware.

2. On July 31, 1765, Thomas McKean, a prominent Delaware lawyer and politician, was appointed as the first colonel of the 1st Delaware Regiment. McKean would go on to play a pivotal role in the American Revolution and would later become a member of the Continental Congress.

3. In 1809, the Delaware and Chesapeake Canal Company was formed. The canal, which connected the Delaware River to the Chesapeake Bay, allowed for increased trade and transportation in the region. However, due to various setbacks, the canal was not completed until 1829.

4. On July 31, 1846, the Delaware Railroad Company was founded. The company's main objective was to construct a railroad line between Wilmington and the Maryland state line. Today, the railroad is still in operation and is known as the Wilmington and Western Railroad.

5. In 1952, the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs was established by the state government. The division is responsible for preserving, protecting, and promoting Delaware's rich history and heritage. They manage several historic sites and museums, including the Old State House in Dover and the Delaware History Museum in Wilmington.
