3. On July 5, 1952, Rapid City experienced a deadly flash flood that killed 238 people and caused extensive damage throughout the city. Today, the flood is still remembered as one of the worst natural disasters in South Dakota history.
4. In 1983, the state of South Dakota celebrated its centennial with events and exhibits throughout the year. The celebration culminated in a massive fireworks display over Mount Rushmore on July 4th.
5. On July 5, 1937, legendary basketball player and coach Don Meyer was born in Wayne, Nebraska. Meyer went on to become the winningest coach in college basketball history, with a career record of 923 wins and only 324 losses. Meyer coached at Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota for 11 seasons.
