1. In 1777, during the American Revolution, General William Howe's British troops captured Fort Ticonderoga, a key strategic point in upstate New York. Although this event did not occur in Delaware, it had significant implications for the fledgling nation's war effort.

2. In 1827, Delaware was the first state to adopt a separate school system for African American children. Prior to this, schools were segregated and black students were often not provided with equal educational resources.

3. On July 6, 1933, Delaware became the first state to ratify the 21st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which repealed Prohibition. This amendment ended the country's 13-year-long ban on the sale and production of alcohol.

4. In 1946, a storm system known as the "Steamboat Hurricane" hit the Delaware Bay and caused significant damage to the surrounding area. The storm, which was responsible for more than 500 deaths along the East Coast, destroyed many homes and businesses in Delaware and left thousands without power.

5. On July 6, 2013, the state of Delaware celebrated the 60th anniversary of its first official state flag. The flag, which features a colonial soldier and a farmer standing beneath a blue-and-gold shield, was adopted on July 24, 1953, after a lengthy design process that involved input from the public and the state government.
