2. In July 7, 1883, the world-famous outlaw Billy the Kid was captured in Stinking Springs, New Mexico. He had been on the run from authorities for several months after escaping from jail in Lincoln County. Billy the Kid, whose real name was Henry McCarty, was a notorious criminal who had been implicated in several murders and robberies. He was eventually sentenced to death and executed in 1881.
