1. Ohio became a state on March 1, 1803, but it wasn't until July 7, 1807 that the state's first bank opened. The Miami Exporting Company Bank opened in Cincinnati, and it was only the third bank to operate in the entire United States.
2. In 1863, Ohio resident Clement Vallandigham was found guilty of violating General Order No. 38, which prohibited disloyal speech during the Civil War. Vallandigham was sentenced to prison, but he fled to Canada instead. He later returned to Ohio and was eventually elected to Congress.
3. One of Ohio's most famous residents, aviation pioneer Wilbur Wright, was born on April 16, 1867. His brother Orville was born on August 19, 1871. However, it was on July 7, 1907 that the Wright brothers set a new world record for sustained flight. Orville flew for one hour, twelve minutes, and forty seconds at a height of about 350 feet.
4. On July 7, 1919, the Akron race riot broke out in the city of Akron. The riot was sparked by a rumor that a white woman had been attacked by a black man. Over the course of several days, violence and looting erupted in the city. The National Guard was brought in to restore order, and several people were killed.
5. Ohio native Neil Armstrong famously became the first human to set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969. But on July 7, 1999, Armstrong was inducted into the Aerospace Walk of Honor in Lancaster, California. The walk honors aviators who have excelled in their field, and Armstrong is one of only a few people to receive the honor twice (he was also inducted in 1991).
