1. In 1859, the city of Denver was officially incorporated. Originally founded during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush, Denver quickly grew into a major transportation and trade hub for the region. Today, it is the capital and largest city in Colorado.

2. On June 1, 1874, Colorado State University (then called Colorado Agricultural College) held its first classes. The school was established as a land-grant institution, with a mission to educate farmers and others in the agricultural sciences. Over the years, it has expanded to offer a wide range of academic programs, and is now known for its research in fields like veterinary medicine, water resource management, and renewable energy.

3. In 1927, the Buckhorn Exchange restaurant opened in Denver. It is one of the oldest continually-operating restaurants in the city, and is known for its Western-themed decor and menu. The restaurant has served a number of notable guests over the years, including several U.S. Presidents.

4. On June 1, 1965, a massive flood hit the Denver area, causing widespread damage and claiming several lives. Heavy rains caused creeks and rivers to overflow, and many homes and businesses were destroyed. The flood led to changes in the way the city manages its waterways, including the construction of new dams and flood control structures.

5. In 2014, the first recreational marijuana shops opened in Colorado, making it one of the first states in the U.S. to legalize pot for non-medical use. The move was controversial, but has generated significant revenue for the state, and has been seen as a possible model for other states considering similar laws.
