5. On June 10, 1978, horse racing legend Affirmed won the Belmont Stakes, becoming the twelfth horse in history to win the Triple Crown. Affirmed was trained by Kentucky native Laz Barrera and was bred by Kentucky-based breeder Louis Wolfson.
