1. Vermont becomes the 14th state - On June 10, 1791, Vermont became the 14th state to join the Union. Its admission was the first since Kentucky in 1792 and the first state admitted that was located entirely outside of the original thirteen colonies.

2. Vermont's first black legislator - On June 10, 1880, Alexander Twilight was elected to the Vermont State Legislature, becoming the first African American elected to a state legislature in the United States.

3. Historic flooding - On June 10, 1927, heavy rainfall caused devastating flooding throughout Vermont and much of the Northeast, destroying homes, businesses, and infrastructure. The flood caused extensive damage and loss of life, with over 200 people losing their lives and thousands being left homeless.

4. Birth of a famous author - On June 10, 1908, author and illustrator Maurice Sendak was born in Brooklyn, New York. Although he did not reside in Vermont, Sendak visited the state frequently and drew inspiration from its rural landscapes for some of his famous works, including "Where the Wild Things Are".

5. Vermont institutes civil unions - On June 10, 2000, Vermont became the first state in the nation to legalize civil unions for same-sex couples, granting them many of the legal rights and benefits of marriage.
