2. In 1864, during the American Civil War, Union and Confederate troops clashed near the small town of Staunton River Bridge in southern Virginia. The resulting battle, which lasted for several hours, left over 1,000 men wounded or dead.

4. In 1963, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson visited Norfolk, Virginia to attend the launching of the USS Enterprise, the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. The ship remains in active service today, nearly six decades after its launch.

5. On June 10, 1997, a tornado struck the town of Appomattox, Virginia, destroying numerous homes and businesses and causing widespread damage. Despite the severity of the storm, there were no fatalities, thanks in part to the quick response of emergency responders and volunteers.
