1. On June 10, 1752, the Virginia Gazette reported on the arrival of the brigantine Mary from London, carrying a variety of goods including "large Copper Pots, Pewter Dishes and Plates, Stationary, Writing Paper, Quills, Ink Powder, Wax, Gun Powder, Shoes and Buckles…"

2. In 1864, during the American Civil War, Union and Confederate troops clashed near the small town of Staunton River Bridge in southern Virginia. The resulting battle, which lasted for several hours, left over 1,000 men wounded or dead.

3. On June 10, 1922, the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington held its annual commencement exercises. Among the graduates was George C. Marshall, who would go on to become one of the most celebrated military leaders of the 20th century, serving as Army chief of staff during World War II and later as Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense.

4. In 1963, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson visited Norfolk, Virginia to attend the launching of the USS Enterprise, the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. The ship remains in active service today, nearly six decades after its launch.

5. On June 10, 1997, a tornado struck the town of Appomattox, Virginia, destroying numerous homes and businesses and causing widespread damage. Despite the severity of the storm, there were no fatalities, thanks in part to the quick response of emergency responders and volunteers.
