1. In 1858, Minnesota became the 32nd state in the United States. It was the second state formed from the Minnesota Territory, which had been created in 1849.

2. Also in 1858, Minnesota's first constitutional convention began in St. Paul. The convention lasted until August 29 and resulted in a draft constitution for the new state.

3. In 1889, Daniel C. Gilman was elected as the first mayor of Duluth, Minnesota. Gilman served three terms as mayor from 1889-1891, 1893-1895, and 1900-1901.

4. In 1930, the first Minnesota State Fair Grandstand was dedicated in St. Paul. The grandstand, which could seat 12,000 people, was designed by the architectural firm of Jones and Emmons and constructed by the WPA.

5. In 1991, the Minnesota Twins defeated the Boston Red Sox 4-2 in a game that was interrupted by a tornado warning. The game was played at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis.
