1. In 1880, the town of Miles City was incorporated in Montana. The town grew quickly as a hub of cattle ranching and transportation in eastern Montana.
2. The infamous outlaw Kid Curry, a member of Butch Cassidy's Wild Bunch, was born on June 11, 1867, near the town of Davis in Montana Territory. Curry was known for his dangerous crimes and his elusive, charismatic personality.
3. On June 11, 1876, a group of soldiers from the 7th U.S. Cavalry were ambushed by Lakota Sioux and Cheyenne warriors in what would become known as the Battle of the Rosebud. The battle was a precursor to the better-known Battle of Little Bighorn, which occurred just nine days later.
4. In 1948, a severe flood hit Missoula, Montana, causing widespread damage and destruction. The floodwaters reached their highest level on June 11, and thousands of residents were displaced from their homes.
5. On June 11, 1937, the state of Montana enacted its first sales tax. The sales tax was controversial and faced legal challenges, but it ultimately became a permanent part of the state's tax code, helping to fund education and other public services.
